Whether you are a community health center or a private practice it has never been more challenging to provide quality patient care and navigate the regulatory waters.

Let’s face it; medical billing is the lifeblood of your business. It is the blood that keeps all the organs moving and keeps your organization running on all cylinders.  What happens when it’s broken? The impacts can be significant. This is why it always surprises me when CFO’s and practice managers entrust the lifeblood of their organization to rookies.

It’s easy to understand how rookies are placed in this role. In a private practice the doctor hires a nice young lady to work the front desk and asks her to take on the medical billing as well. The practice was small and then it grew. Now, it’s a brave new world and cash flow is king. Very soon she is in over her head and practice revenue is declining.

In a community health center we typically see heavy turnover in the billing departments and most CFO’s have strong financial backgrounds without much billing experience. As a result it’s challenging for CFO’s to assess the billing skillset. In a billing department it’s even more critical to have strong leadership skills. Eventually, what I’ve seen is that nobody in the billing department talks to one another. Each person is working independently and everyone in executive management is seeking answers to why the billing revenue is down. The common rookie answer is “we don’t have enough time to get everything done.”

Putting your faith and trust in “rookie” medical billers can be the kiss of death for your revenue especially in today’s environment. What are your alternatives?

There are a couple of solutions to this problem:

If you select the right medical biller in the beginning you save a lot of headaches. A bit of levity – I’m reminded of an episode of Two and a Half Men where Alan and Charlie are having problems with the satellite dish. Charlie says he’ll call “the guy” to fix it and Alan says “I am the guy!” If you ever saw the episode you know when Alan tried to fix the satellite himself he fell off the roof and broke just about every bone. In the end of the episode his ex comes in and hits him with the door. This is a very vivid picture of what happens with medical billing if you don’t “call the guy!”
